Let's talk the mysterious world of mixing and production. In other words, the box that we aggressively cram our beloved songs into. Has anyone notice this box is getting smaller and smaller?
Back to that later.
Music is...
It MUST convey emotion. Without emotion it's just noises coming out of speakers. To make someone feel different is such a powerful and dangerous responsibility. To change someones state of emotion based on our actions, our words or our movements is a super power that none of us are really aware we possess. Music should capture these energies with all their force and flood the listener with raw unfiltered emotions.
The corporations have taken art off the people. Selling us garbage for profit, we listen to it, it then turns us into unemotional morons that crave more of the crap that turned us into morons in the first place.
…but don't get me wrong, Im a capitalist and all. Its not the corporations fault. The money only goes where the money is. I can assure you however, the heads of this major industry, did not have their culture so manipulated and processed as we do today.
The people are to blame. wether its due to being uninformed or misinformed, I'm not sure but we are slaves to the labels that dictate our culture and emotions. Have a think about how the message has changed over the last hundred years of music. This goes much further than music of corse. Most modern 'expressions' are dictated today by an underlying stench of big business.
The way in which we Master (Final step of the mixing process) music is a sign that the establishment has won. What started off as a war to have the loudest song on the radio has left the mainstream music scene with unemotional, un-dynamic sound squashed into our skulls through high definition head phones (oh the irony). Even indie labels were forced to follow suit in order to get radio support. This virus of ideas then floods through to the next generation of artists that feel the need to comply with the industry in order to 'get noticed'. I hear so many great up and coming bands and producers that sound astoundingly better on their demo recordings than their studio albums. Why?
I am not one of those lo-fi hipsters that wants to run everything through a cassette player to get that 'Lo-Fi' sound (great technique though)....But I will defend dynamics and space in music to the death!!
Capture what is happening rather than artificially reinforcing it.
If you want to convey emotion, music should sound as if it's happening in front and around you, not as if you are sitting on stage with the band. When listening you should be wondering why there is a need for any other song to have been made in the history of time. You should forget where you are and what your name is. You should be brought into the mind of the artist and taken on a journey.
I want a song to bring up old feelings and transform me to an earlier time were relative emotions lay.
Is there hope?
Things are going to change. The internet has already opened so many ways to access true art and bypass the, what I like to call "Trough Music" but the stigma of what is the right way to finalize music has got into the heads of people.
It's easy to point upwards but where are all the civilians supporting good music? With any sort of success people get compromised with the dollar signs. Where is the fucking artist integrity.
…enter computer juice.
COMPUTER JUICE will be swimming against the grain. Supporting forward thinking music with nothing else in mind but making art for art sake. We will be the connection to the New York underground and anyone else who wants to rise up and take music back!
Watch this and tell me you remember your name..
